Cosmetic Injection FAQ

FAQ

BOTOX® Cosmetic

What does it do?

This purified protein in Botox blocks the nerve impulses to muscles causing them to refrain from contracting. Botox injections are given in extremely small doses by a licensed medical professional and are injected directly into the specific muscles that lead to these lines. These isolated muscles are treated and can no longer contract. Botox is the only treatment of its type that is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Is Botox Cosmetic Right For You?

Botox Cosmetic is the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment for facial wrinkles, frown lines & wrinkle reduction. Botox Cosmetic allows people to look and feel younger without the risk or cost of traditional plastic surgery.

What to Expect

No anesthesia is required for Botox; discomfort is usually brief and minimal. Your Medical professional treatment provider will administer a few tiny injections of Botox directly into the muscles that cause those moderate-to-severe lines. The full treatment time last between 10-20 minutes. There is no downtime following the Botox procedure.

Dysport®

What is Dysport®?

Prescription Dysport is an injection used to temporarily improve the look of your moderate to severe frown lines without changing the look of your whole face. The untreated facial muscles still work normally, allowing you to freely show facial expressions, such as smiling, in untreated areas.

How does Dysport® work?

Over time, the muscles above and between the eyebrows repeatedly contract and tighten, causing wrinkles. But, with just 1 injection of Dysport into each of 5 points between and over the eyebrows, Dysport blocks the signal from the nerve to the muscles, ultimately resulting in a reduction of muscle activity and temporarily preventing contraction of the muscles that cause frown lines.

How long does it last?

For up to four entire months, you could have the look that you love. Dysport® works to block the signal from the nerve to the muscles, resulting in a reduction of muscle activity and temporarily preventing contraction of the muscles that cause frown lines.

JUVÉDERM®

How is JUVÉDERM® made?

JUVÉDERM® is manufactured using HYLACROSS technology, which creates a smooth-consistency gel. Some types of Juvederm contain lidocaine, which improves comfort during treatment.

How does JUVÉDERM® work?

Youthful skin contains an abundance of a naturally–occurring hydrating substance called hyaluronic acid (HA), which is the same in all species. But as we age, sunlight and other factors contribute to reducing the quantity of HA in our skin. This lack of HA causes our skin to lose structure and volume, creating facial wrinkles and folds—like the parentheses around the nose and mouth.

Using a dermal filler like JUVÉDERM® is a safe and effective way to replace the lost HA in the skin, bringing back its volume and smoothing away facial wrinkles and folds.

How is the treatment done?

Generally a topical anesthetic is applied prior to treatment of Juvederm, which allows for minimal to no discomfort. Ice may be applied during the injection session as well to minimize any swelling that might occur. A series of injections of Juvederm are done using a very fine needle, and the results are visible right away. The injections take 15 to 30 minutes to perform, and are done only by the physician in our office.

What can I expect after treatment with JUVÉDERM®?

The results are seen immediately after the Juvederm injections are completed. Because HA absorbs water, small areas of puffiness or fullness often appear in the several hours after treatment, and they are usually only palpable, not visible. These disappear rapidly and are usually gone within a few hours or by the next morning. Sometimes a small bruise can appear at the site, but those disappear quickly as well. Regular makeup can be applied to the face after treatment, and patients can resume their medications (aspirin, etc) right away. The results of Juvederm will last anywhere from 6 months to a year, but it varies from person to person. Supplemental “touch-up” treatments may be required to achieve and maintain optimal correction of your wrinkles and folds.

Types of JUVÉDERM®

Since getting approval for the original formula in 2006 the product line has grown to include five FDA-approved forms of JUVÉDERM®. If you’re considering Juvéderm® it’s important to discuss all of your options with our experienced medical professional.

JUVÉDERM® Ultra, like all JUVÉDERM® products, is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is injected into the skin to smooth the look of fine lines and wrinkles as well as facial folds. It’s the only filler that the FDA has verified can remain effective up to a year, however the average for Juvederm Ultra is closer to 9 months. It is also the smooth consistency of the formula that makes JUVÉDERM® stand out among the other filler options.

The smoothness and consistency of Juvederm comes from the manufacturing process known as HYLACROSS™ technology. It’s used solely by Allergan to create JUVÉDERM® Ultra and the other JUVÉDERM® products. The result is a viscos formula with 9% hyaluronic acid cross-linking, which greatly effects many aspects of the filler. Patients like the longevity and medical professionals appreciate the predictability of the Juvederm product as well as its superior flow.

JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC was approved in 2010 for use by the FDA. It’s essentially the same as JUVÉDERM® Ultra, however it includes an extra ingredient. Lidocaine, a local anesthesia, is added to decrease discomfort during injections. Even though there is just 0.3% lidocaine in the Juvederm Ultra XC, it makes a significant difference when the procedure takes place.

This higher concentration of cross-linking helps JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus last a little longer at around 12 months. While JUVÉDERM® Ultra is injected into the middle of the dermis, JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus goes into the deeper layers of the skin.

JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC is the NEWEST PRODUCT to receive FDA approval. VOLUMA™ XC was developed to address concerns with significant volume loss in the cheeks. It is the first and only filler to be FDA-approved for this purpose. The filler is injected into the deeper layers of the dermis in three areas of the cheek: the apex, apple and hollow. Patients will be happy to know that the results can last up to 2 years. This particular JUVÉDERM® product is only for patients that are over 21 years old.
