What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a skin condition in which redness and small, sometimes pus-filled bumps develop on the face. It is a genetic inflammatory disorder with no known cause and is more common in people with fair skin and light eyes. A hypersensitivity to the sun and other factors cause the blood vessels near the surface of the skin to expand and the rush of circulation to the area make the complexion appear red. When the body notices an injury (in this case, the rush of circulation & dilation of blood vessels) it sends more inflammatory cells to the area in an attempt to fix the problem, which only ends up making it worse.

What are the causes?

The cause of rosacea isn’t known, but a combination of environmental and hereditary factors may be the culprit. It is not related to poor hygiene. Symptoms may be triggered or aggravated by extreme shifts in temperature, spicy foods and hot drinks, alcohol, sunlight, exercise, cosmetics, drugs that dilate the blood vessels and emotions. Women, people with fair skin, people who are over the age of 30 and people with a family history of rosacea are more likely to develop this condition.

The most common symptoms of rosacea can include:

  • Facial redness, including small blood vessels on the nose and cheeks
  • Pus-filled bumps on the face
  • Irritated, swollen, and dry eyes
  • Reddened eyelids
  • An enlarged nose

There is no cure for rosacea, but treatments can help to control and reduce these signs and symptoms.

How can I control my rosacea?

We can help you control your rosacea with the help of intense pulsed light and fractional laser technology. IPL photofacials use light to dramatically reduce broken capillaries in the skin.* Red pigment in the face will absorb the light from the device and eventually be broken down. The result is clearer skin with a more even tone.* Picoway Resolve is FDA-cleared to treat vascular conditions. It stimulates new collagen production in the skin to clear up unwanted pigment.* Best of all, there is no surgery or downtime involved.
